Myanmar is open for business – and investments in the oil and gas sector are increasing. A round with new offshore licences was held in 2013 – where several major oil companies were awarded licenses. Seismic operations are ongoing and the first wells have been drilled. Myanmar started export of oil already in 1853 and was one of the first oil producers in the world. Myanmar is now experiencing a new wave of investments into the oil and gas sector as the country is opening its economy and offering new exploration licenses to international investors. New gas discoveries have the potential to transform the country and the economy – by creating significant job opportunities and potentially dramatic increase in government revenues. The market that is opening up will also create major business opportunities for Norwegian and other international companies.
